Francesco Schettino
The world salutes a new evil. Named Francesco Schettino, the captain of Costa Concordia decided to abandon his sinking ship to save his life. He also left hundreds of passengers on the edge of a tragic death.
Media have already crucified him for such behaviour. In different degrees. It is understandable: honour and selfishness do not match. The story usually goes that the captain is the last to leave the boat.
Oh well… not exactly.
Why should we expect Francesco Schettino to react differently to how most of us do everyday?
Why should we be surprised for such selfish behaviour… in a world where selfishness is taught on the streets, at schools and indeed at colleges?
Why should Francesco Schettino choose death with collective honor before survival if the world bounds to focusing on individual profit?
Francesco Schettino is a man who gave up on his duty. Embarrasment might be his companion along his entire life.
But Francesco Schettino is just a western man of his time. A time of hypocrisy, double moral and urgent hedonism.
How many sinking boats are we abandoning every day?
What a sinking metaphor.
